The Wicklow Community Games County Chess Finals brought together the county’s brightest young players for a day of intense competition, strategy, and sportsmanship. With teams competing across Under-11, Under-13, and Under-16 categories, the event showcased the growing strength and popularity of chess among young people in Wicklow.

The Under-11 team event featured Aughrim-Annacurra, Enniskerry, and Lakeside in a closely fought contest. All three teams displayed excellent teamwork and composure, with several matches decided by the narrowest of margins. In the end, Enniskerry emerged victorious, demonstrating consistency and sharp tactical play to claim first place.

In the Under-13 category, Arklow, Aughrim-Annacurra, and Enniskerry battled it out in another highly competitive section. Aughrim-Annacurra delivered a strong and determined performance to secure second place, but it was Enniskerry who once again came out on top, sealing first place after a series of well-earned victories. Arklow also impressed with their resilience and competitive spirit throughout.

The Under-16 competition brought the finals to an exciting conclusion. Aughrim-Annacurra produced an outstanding performance to take first place, showing confidence and control in key matches. Enniskerry continued their strong run across the tournament by finishing in second place, while Arklow claimed third after a series of hard-fought games.

Across all age groups, the standard of play was exceptionally high, with players demonstrating not only skill and concentration but also great respect and sportsmanship. The event highlighted the depth of talent in Wicklow and the bright future of chess within the county.

A special word of thanks goes to Arklow Community Games for hosting such a well-organised and welcoming event. Their efforts ensured a smooth and enjoyable day for players, coaches, and families alike, providing the perfect setting for this showcase of young chess talent.

With county champions now crowned, attention now turns to the next round, where Wicklow’s top teams will face strong opposition from Kildare and Dublin.
